Sand Trap Louvers

Double-layer vertical blades that trap and discharge sand

Principle
Two-row vertical channel labyrinth
Cleaning
Self-cleaning, drained base frame
Sizes
150 – 1,950 mm, any combination
Pressure drop
About 30 Pa at 1 m/s

Overview

The ultimate environmental shield. A sand trap louvre is the pre-filter for an air conditioning plant in areas with extreme sand and industrial dust: two rows of vertically arranged channel sections form a labyrinth for the air, and the change of direction drops sand and large dust particles out of the stream, even at high concentrations.

Drainage holes in the base frame let the sand run out, so the louvre is self-cleaning and maintenance-free. It is sized for a low velocity, about 1 m/s through the face: 10,000 m³/h, for example, takes an 1,800 × 1,500 mm louvre at about 30 Pa. That keeps the load off the plant's filters; it is not a substitute for them. The louvres are vision-proof, with about 25% free area.

Widths and heights run from 150 to 1,950 mm in 150 mm steps, in any combination, and larger openings are built from combined sections: from 1,050 mm high integral sand chutes are fitted, and taller louvres are split with an additional chute. They are aluminium, weighing about 18 kg/m², or galvanized or stainless steel on request, in RAL 9010 powder coat or any RAL colour.

Weather Louvres (DPE)

Rain and bird protection for fresh air and exhaust openings

Where rain, leaves and birds are the problem rather than sand, the opening takes a weather louvre. Narrowly spaced aerofoil blades keep direct rain out with a low pressure drop and little regenerated noise, and a perimeter border makes installation quick.

Free area is about 60%, or 45% with an insect screen, and the air velocity through a fresh air opening should stay within 2 – 2.5 m/s. At 2.5 m/s a 1,000 × 990 mm louvre passes about 8,150 m³/h at 30 – 35 Pa and 48 – 50 dB(A); the largest single run, 4,900 × 4,720 mm, about 192,000 m³/h. Sections combine side by side or one above another on a 100 mm mullion for large façades, in aluminium, or galvanized or stainless steel on request.

Certifications & standards

What each mark on this product means, who issues it and how it applies here.

All certifications & standards
  • ISO 9001

    Quality Management Systems

Issued by International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

    What it is
The international standard for quality management systems. A certified company works to documented processes, checks its output against them, records what it finds and corrects the cause of any fault, and is audited on all of it by an independent certification body.

Frequently asked

For anything these answers do not cover, speak to one of our engineers directly.

Does a sand trap louvre replace the plant's filters?

No. It separates sand and coarse dust at low velocity so the filters behind it are not overloaded; the supply air filtration stays in place.

How does it clean itself?

Sand falls out of the airstream in the labyrinth and drains through holes in the base frame, or through integral sand chutes on taller louvres.

How do I size a sand trap louvre?

For about 1 m/s through the face, the face area in m² equals the airflow in m³/s. 10,000 m³/h is 2.78 m³/s, so it needs about 2.7 m²: an 1,800 × 1,500 mm louvre, at about 30 Pa.

How big can a sand trap louvre be?

Single sections run to 1,950 × 1,950 mm; larger openings, up to 3,900 mm, are built from combined sections.

What if the opening needs rain protection, not sand?

Use our weather louvre: aerofoil blades, about 60% free area, and sections that combine into continuous runs.
